18 Aug 2008, 0439 hrs IST, Gauree Malkarnekar, TNN
PANAJI: In addition to girls of standards fifth to eight, boys from
the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes studying in the same classes
in government and government-aided schools will be provided free
notebooks under the Sarva Shikshya Abhiyan (SSA) scheme this year.
Senior officials of the SSA said that 1,32,000 notebooks have already
been purchased for the purpose with state and central government
funds.
In all, 12,000 books will be dispatched to each of the 11 taluka
offices of the SSA from where the books will be distributed to the
beneficiaries. Each beneficiary will be given two 100 page and two 200
page books.
Last year, books under the ‘project book scheme’ were distributed to
all girl students studying from standards fifth to eight in government
and government-aided schools.
Nearly 50,000 students in government and government-aided schools
across the state will benefit through the scheme. Officials in the SSA
informed that an additional batch of books would be purchased to meet
the requirement.
A senior official of the SSA said, “The books have arrived. They have
been dispatched to the taluka offices. The scheme is expected to help
retain more students in schools.”
This year, the SSA has also decided to distribute free bags to
students of Std I in all government primary schools. The bags have
also arrived and dispatched for distribution, said the official. This
is also the first time that the scheme of distribution of free bags is
being implemented. The scheme will reach over 10,000 Std I students in
938 government primary schools across Goa.
The SSA has also acquired and is in the process of distributing
first-aid kits to pre-primary schools in the state run by the
government or trusts recognised by the government.
