Karat meets Maya to discuss Third Front
DH News Service, New Delhi:
The fact that the CPM has not given up its idea of the Third Front was
once again proved on Sunday as Party General Secretary Prakash Karat
had a three-hour-long meeting with the BSP supremo Mayawati.
Karat avoided the reporters, who were waiting outside Mayawati’s
residence. However sources said that the two leaders had discussed the
formation of a “national alternative” to the two main parties -
Congress and BJP. The meeting assumes significance in the wake of
Mayawati unilaterally announcing that her party would contest all the
80 Lok Sabha seats in Uttar Pradesh.
Telugu Desam Party (TDP) chief Chandrababu Naidu on Saturday met both
Karat and Mayawati to discuss ways to evolve the Third Front.
Karat’s meeting with Mayawati on Sunday comes three days after he met
Janata Dal-Secular (JD-S) leader and former prime minister H D Deve
Gowda.
In Thursday’s meeting with Gowda, Karat along with Communist Party of
India (CPI) leaders A B Bardhan and D Raja discussed the latest
political developments in the country and spoke about forming a strong
Third front.
Absentees
However, Rashtriya Lok Dal (RLD) leader Ajit Singh and Mayawati were
absent at that meeting.
Om Prakash Chauthala of the Indian National Lok Dal and Naidu of the
TDP – two other major constituents of the proposed Third Front – were
also not present at the luncheon meeting.
